ASUU Declares Pantami’s Professorship Award Illegal; May Sanction FUTO

Pantami

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has kicked against the award of “professor” to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami.

The union has therefore declared the elevation as illegal and asked that he should immediately be stripped of the professorial title.

Speaking after Monday’s National Executive Council, the President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that, “You cannot be a minister and a lecturer in a university. It is an encouragement of illegality.

“Pantami has to quit as a minister and be tried for doing double jobs within the same federal system. He is not qualified. Pantami should not be treated as a professor.”

Pantami and seven other academics were in September, 2021 elevated by the council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri to the position of professorship at the council’s 186th meeting.

The minister’s elevation has generated controversy, with many faulting FUTO for the decision.

Those against his elevation argued that he was not teaching in the university and that his highest academic attainment was the post of a lecturer before he ventured into politics.
