Promise Of Immediate Construction Of The Road Fetched APC Overwhelming Votes In Last LG Election

The entire neighbourhoods of Monkey Village and its environs were thrown into jubilation when some officials believed to be acting on the backing of the Lagos State Government, promised to construct the only major access road into the settlement, at the industrial area of Maza-Maza in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos.
They made the promise at the dying minutes of last Local Government Area Election in Lagos which was held on the 24th of July, 2021.
The government representatives had figured that as in past elections, the residents would vote overwhelmingly for the opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, so they used the construction of the road as a bait to woo the electorate over to the All Progressive Party, APC.
Shortly after they made the promise, residents noticed that construction materials including sand and interlocking bricks were immediately brought to site which convinced them that the officials really meant business.
Next, Community leaders who were already mobilising for PDP made a u-turn as they began to convince the people to vote massively for APC.
It worked as APC enjoyed overwhelming victory in the poll both at Oriade Local Council and Amuwo Odofin Local Government.
However, barely 8 months after, full construction work is yet to commence on the Monkey Village road. The only thing that has been done is demolition of structures considered too close to the road as well as provision of drainage facility on a portion of the road that could possibly not measure up to the length of an electric pole.
Worried about the slow pace of work, most of the residents have started to express resentment, concluding that the authorities may have played a fast one on them.
They have been insinuating that the government abandoned them for so long because they had queued behind the opposition party.

The village posseses the character of a high brow area giving the number of flashy vehicles coming from there and also the presence of many exotic residential buildings.
But bad road has remained the major challenge, causing residents sleepless nights.
The problem of the area has been compounded as it is a trailer route, with heavy duty vehicles taking over the road all through the year , thereby worsening its condition.
Only on Wednesday, 9 February this year, the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu while inaugurating a new health centre in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area promised to reconstruct the Old Ojo road which has been too bad after being abandoned for many years.
Old Ojo road directly connects the Monkey Village road.
