The Lagos State Government has called on residents in the state to participate in the commemoration of World Toilet Day tomorrow, taking advantage of the opportunity to raise awareness against open defecation and other actions that undermine sanitation in the state.
The government made the call during a cleanup exercise and sensitization programme against open defecation, at Oshodi motor terminals 1, 2 and 3, which is a pre-event to the World Toilet Day Commemoration on November 19, 2024.
According to the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab in a social media post, some government officials participated in the programme aimed at promoting a healthy sanitation culture among drivers, commuters, and Lagosians at large.
Wahab stated that the pre-event served to promote proper waste disposal and sanitation practices; educate the public on the risks associated with open defecation and foster community involvement in maintaining a clean environment.
He believed that addressing the menace of open defecation would help improve the quality of living and prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases including cholera and diarrhea.
The United Nations introduced the annual commemoration of World Toilet Day to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis and inspire action to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6.
This year’s theme is “Leveraging Water for Peace,” recognizing the need for an end to open defecation, thereby containing the contamination of drinking water sources and minimizing the spread of diseases.
