Lagos launches crackdown on open defecation, arrests 10

The Lagos State Government has launched a crackdown on open defecation, and individuals who persist in this behaviour risk arrest.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab stated that ten individuals were apprehended during a night patrol in Berger by Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps.

Wahab advised residents to use toilet facilities, aligning with the government’s zero-tolerance policy for open defecation.

Ahead of the World Toilet Day celebration on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Lagos State Government promoted awareness and sanitation efforts, organising a cleanup exercise and sensitisation programme at Oshodi motor terminals.

Wahab underscored the importance of addressing open defecation to improve living standards and prevent diseases like cholera and diarrhea.

The World Toilet Day, a global awareness campaign initiated by UN-Water aims to address the sanitation crisis and promote Sustainable Development Goal 6.

This year’s theme, ‘Leveraging Water for Peace,’ highlights the imperative to end open defecation, protect drinking water sources, and prevent disease transmission.

The United Nations reports that 4.2 billion people lack access to safely managed sanitation, with 673 million practicing open defecation, posing significant public health risks.

Clean and safe toilets are crucial for keeping girls in school, reducing harassment and infection risks.
